The NDIS, or National Disability Insurance Scheme, is an initiative by the Australian government designed to assist people with disabilities. Its goal is to empower participants by offering them more autonomy in choosing and managing the services and support they require.
Through personalized funding, the NDIS allocates resources based on each participant’s specific needs and aspirations. To qualify for the NDIS, individuals must be under 65 years old, Australian citizens or permanent residents, and have a permanent disability that substantially affects their daily life and activities.
To qualify for the NDIS, you must:
◉ Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
◉ Be under 65 years of age
◉ Have a permanent and significant disability that impacts your ability to complete everyday activities.
You can apply for the NDIS by:
Visiting the NDIS website or calling 1800 800 110
Completing an Access Request Form.
Providing medical and supporting documents about your disability and its impact on daily life.
NDIS funding can be used for activities that encourage social inclusion, relationship-building, and skill development, such as:
◉ Attending community events
◉ Joining social groups
◉ Participating in recreational or hobby activities
Yes! The NDIS gives you full choice and control over your providers. You can select and switch providers at any time if your needs or preferences change.
Core Supports: Help with everyday activities, including personal care, transport, and consumables.
Capacity Building Supports: Focus on developing skills, independence, and long-term growth (e.g., employment training, therapy, and community participation).
Your NDIS plan will list all the funded supports you are eligible for based on your goals and assessed needs. If you’re unsure, contact your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or Plan Manager for guidance.
You have three options for managing your NDIS funding:
Self-Managed – You control your funds, pay providers directly, and claim reimbursements.
Plan-Managed – A Plan Manager handles payments and budgeting on your behalf.
NDIA-Managed – The NDIS agency pays registered providers directly.
If your needs or circumstances change, you can request a plan review at any time. This allows adjustments to your funding and supports to better suit your current situation.
A Local Area Coordinator (LAC), Support Coordinator, or Plan Manager can assist you in:
◉ Understanding your plan
◉ Finding suitable service providers
◉ Organizing and managing your funded supports
