Why hello there!
We’re Alicia and Imran Khan, the proud co-founders of Grateful Givers, a grassroots movement dedicated to helping Brisbane’s homeless and those in need.
Our journey began in Christmas 2012, when we spent our first holiday giving to those sleeping rough in our city. That moment touched our hearts forever, and since then, we’ve provided gifts, essential items, and support to thousands of homeless individuals, struggling families, and children doing it tough—not just at Christmas, but all year round.
What started as a small act of kindness between the two of us has grown into a global movement, with people from New Zealand, the USA, Sweden, and beyond joining in. With the help of social media, local news, and our incredible community of givers, we’ve turned compassion into action.
We now have the most amazing team with us who help this beautiful movement keep growing: Michaela, Margo, Brendon and Sam.
How We Help
We collect and distribute essential items—backpacks, toiletries, warm clothing, bedding, food, and drinks—through direct, hands-on giving. Every donation goes straight into the hands of those who need it most.
Our Challenges & Dreams
As a small incorporated association, we face hurdles when it comes to fundraising, but we’re working hard to expand our impact. This year, we’re aiming to:
✅ Hire a transport van to streamline deliveries
✅ Provide safety vests for volunteers to create visibility and unity
✅ Launch our very own website to reach more people in need
✅ Get banners and signage for fundraising events like sausage sizzles and markets

Our back story
It all began on Christmas Eve 2012 with only 1 hour before the shops were due to close..
Imran and Alicia were sitting at the dining table talking about the usual Christmas Day plans for the following day. We began to talk about how Christmas may feel if we were to wake up homeless on the streets of Brisbane. Feelings like loneliness, abandonment, stress, sadness and hopelessness would surely be some of the emotions felt. That’s quite different to how the rest of our city that woke up in their homes and had plans with friends and family the next day would experience on Christmas.
So now with only 30 minutes until the shops would close we raced to the closest supermarket and purchased some essential items and sweets with excitement all over our faces! We raced home, packed them into little bags, wrote a heartfelt Christmas card and eagerly waited for Christmas morning to arrive.
Christmas day came and we drove into the City to hand deliver them to anyone we found sleeping rough. We left the city feeling different, like we had hopefully made someone’s day unexpectedly a little brighter.
Since then we have repeated this process every single Christmas Eve and on the way have amassed a following of like-minded and intrigued collective of people from all over the world.
Why we do it
The fact is, anyone can become homeless. A run of bad luck, maybe too many decisions that didn’t pan out and then your whole world can change.
Our passion is helping people. We use this passion in our daily jobs and have created a charity based around the simple philosophy of ‘sharing the love’. We want others to see how easy it is to get involved and make generational impacts so that the future is bright

Volunteer Roles May Include:
Packing Gift Bags
Help us pack gift bags filled with essentials and surprises for those in need. We receive generous donations throughout the year and love creating thoughtful gift packs to brighten someone’s day.
Delivery & Outreach
Join one of our team members to deliver gift bags directly to people in need. This can include outreach on the streets of Brisbane City, Logan, or even the Gold Coast—wherever we’re needed most.
Meal Prep Assistance
Get involved behind the scenes by helping prepare meals in our commercial kitchen. It’s a great way to contribute and connect with the team while making a real impact.
Share Your Skills
If you have experience in areas like hairdressing, coffee making, or basic food handling, we’d love to have you involved! These small acts can make a big difference in someone’s life.
You’ll always be working alongside a supportive team and like-minded people who genuinely care about giving back to the community.
